Maths

Intent

At Heathfields Infant and Wilnecote Junior Academy, our intent is to inspire all pupils to become confident, resilient, and enthusiastic mathematicians. We aim to provide a high-quality, inclusive maths curriculum that fosters deep understanding, fluency, and reasoning. Through the use of the White Rose Maths scheme, we ensure a consistent and progressive approach that builds on prior learning and prepares pupils to apply their mathematical knowledge in real-life contexts and across the wider curriculum. Additionally, at the Juniors, our weekly Number Club sessions are designed to strengthen foundational skills and support rapid recall of number facts, particularly times tables, which are essential for future success in mathematics.

Implementation

Mathematics is taught daily using the White Rose Maths scheme, which follows a mastery approach and a carefully sequenced curriculum. Lessons are structured around small steps to ensure secure understanding and progression. Pupils engage with a range of representations—concrete, pictorial, and abstract—to support conceptual development. Opportunities for reasoning, problem-solving, and mathematical talk are embedded throughout. Teachers use ongoing assessment to inform planning, provide targeted support, and ensure appropriate challenge for all learners. To further support fluency and confidence, junior pupils participate in a weekly Number Club session focused on developing core number skills and improving times tables knowledge through engaging and interactive activities.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Wilnecote Junior Academy will have developed a secure and fluent understanding of mathematical concepts. They will be able to reason logically, solve problems independently, and communicate their thinking clearly. The consistent use of the White Rose Maths scheme, alongside targeted support through Number Club, ensures that pupils are well-prepared for the transition to secondary school and equipped with the skills needed to succeed in a numerate society. Pupils will leave with a positive attitude towards mathematics and the confidence to embrace future learning.

Homework

Maths Homework at Wilnecote Junior Academy

At Wilnecote Junior Academy, we believe that regular, purposeful maths practice at home helps reinforce learning and builds confidence. To support this, we use two key platforms for homework:

White Rose Maths Homework

Children will receive homework linked to the current unit they are studying in class. These tasks come from the White Rose Maths scheme and are designed to:

  • Reinforce key concepts from the unit
  • Encourage independent thinking and problem-solving
  • Provide parents with a clear view of what their child is learning

Homework is provided as printed sheets and is intended to be manageable and meaningful.

Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)

To support fluency in multiplication, children are expected to complete at least 15 minutes of TTRS practice per week. This can be done in short sessions across the week and helps children:

  • Improve speed and accuracy with times tables
  • Prepare for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
  • Build confidence through fun games and challenges

Teachers monitor progress and celebrate achievements in school to keep children motivated and engaged.

Online Resources to support learning

White Rose 1 minute maths app

It is available to download on Google Play, Apple App Store or Amazon store.

This encourages children to quickly recall facts and see how many they can get right in one minute, helping to develop their mathematical fluency.

Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS)

Times Tables Rock Stars is a highly engaging, gamified learning platform designed to help children master their multiplication facts with speed and accuracy. It is used in thousands of schools and homes worldwide and is especially effective for pupils aged 6 and up.

Key ways TTRS supports times tables learning:

  • Daily Practice: TTRS encourages short, regular bursts of practice, which research shows is the most effective way to build fluency and recall.
  • Adaptive Learning: The platform identifies which multiplication facts a child struggles with and targets those areas for improvement.
  • Game Modes: Children can choose from various modes like Garage, Studio, Gig, and Arena, each designed to reinforce different aspects of times tables learning.
  • Motivational Rewards: Pupils earn coins for correct answers, which they can use to customise their rock star avatars and climb the leaderboard—boosting motivation and engagement.
  • Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) Preparation: TTRS includes a Soundcheck mode that mimics the Year 4 statutory MTC, helping children prepare confidently.
  • Progress Tracking: Teachers and parents can monitor progress, identify gaps, and celebrate achievements.
  • Accessibility: Available on all devices, with features to support learners with additional needs.

By combining fun, competition, and personalised learning, TTRS makes times tables practice enjoyable and effective, helping children build confidence and fluency in multiplication.

URBrainy

URBrainy offers a comprehensive and engaging approach to helping children master their times tables. It provides:

  • Targeted Worksheets: Each multiplication table (from 2x to 12x) is covered with dedicated worksheets that include written formats, practice exercises, and mixed tables challenges.
  • Progressive Structure: Resources are aligned with the National Curriculum, introducing tables in the recommended year groups:
    • Year 2: 2x, 5x, 10x
    • Year 3: 3x, 4x, 8x
    • Year 4: 6x, 7x, 9x, 11x, 12x
  • Interactive Games: Children can practise rapid recall through fun, timed games that reinforce fluency and accuracy.
  • Multiplication Tables Check (MTC): URBrainy includes a dedicated MTC practice area to help Year 4 pupils prepare for the statutory check.
  • Flexible Learning Styles: Activities cater to different learning preferences—visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic—through repetition, chanting, and game-based learning.

This makes URBrainy a valuable tool for both classroom use and home learning, supporting pupils in developing quick recall and a deeper understanding of multiplication facts.

Wilnecote Support Videos

At Wilnecote Junior Academy, we understand that supporting your child with maths at home can sometimes feel challenging—especially when methods and terminology may differ from how you learned. That’s why we’ve created this Maths Support Videos section.

Here, you’ll find short, easy-to-follow videos that explain key mathematical concepts and strategies your child is learning in school. These videos are designed to:

  • Help you understand the methods we use in class
  • Support your child with homework and revision
  • Build confidence in discussing and practising maths at home

The videos align with our use of the White Rose Maths scheme and include guidance on areas such as place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, and times tables.

We hope these resources make maths more accessible and enjoyable for both you and your child. If you have any questions or need further support, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
